Suspended Timber Flooring

Suspended Timber Flooring Foundation Base

What makes suspended timber flooring different from regular timber flooring is the fact that this type of flooring is suspended. So, that means that the timber floor is a bit removed from the foundation. With suspended flooring, the floor joists are placed a bit above the subfloor with the help of sleeper walls, which is just another name for supporting walls. Once the wall plate and the tassel walls are attached, the floor joists can easily rest on them.

However, what we have to keep in mind is that the tassel walls and wall plates are separated from one another by a damp proof course. This is very important as it prevents moisture from causing the floor to decay but there needs to be enough air circulation to prevent moisture. Ventilation is also very important, so placing vents in the external wall are crucial to keeping the timber dry at all times.

Another thing that you can use to make your suspended floor even better is to use some kind of insulation, with a blanket and rigid insulation being the best options. With quilted or blanket insulation, there will be netting added to the joists. On the other hand, with rigid insulation, there will be battens supporting the joists.

What is a Suspended Timber Floor?

Suspended timber flooring is usually found in old houses where the timber floorboards are joined with the joists just above the house’s foundation. In this way, there will be a small opening between the floorboards and the foundation that will help with both air movement and ventilation. This is also often used in many commercial and domestic properties.

Houses that have been built recently do not particularly have this type of flooring. That is because there are many modern options that are just as good but much more durable and low maintenance. However, a suspended timber floor is also a great option not only because of the ventilation and air movement but also because it allows for wires to run under the floorboards.

Suspended Timber Floor Advantages

As I have already mentioned, there are many advantages to using suspended timber flooring. With this type of flooring, you will not have to worry about damage to the floorboards as the open space below them allows for good ventilation and air movement. This will help prevent moisture and dampness.

Where is a Suspended Timber Floor Normally Found?

Suspended timber flooring is usually found in older houses that were built years ago. Back in the day, this was a popular flooring option because of the many advantages that it has. However, suspended timber flooring is not used as much now because some of the modern options are much better.

Is it worth insulating a suspended timber floor?

Most construction materials require additional insulation because of their low insulation properties. The same goes for timber flooring. It is worth insulating a suspended timber floor because of the fact it can help save a lot of energy and with that save a lot of money. To add to that, there will be more comfort and less condensation if the timber floor is suspended.

How much is a suspended timber floor?

Depending on the distance between the slab span, as well as the band beams and service runs, suspended timber flooring can cost anywhere from $70 to $100 per square metre. However, the cost can most certainly vary.

If you are just interested in a cheap & affordable flooring alternative, consider low-cost vinyl sheet flooring as an option.

What is the Best Way to Insulate a Suspended Timber Floor?

There are several ways in which you can insulate your suspended timber floor. We can mention reflective insulation, bulk insulation, and composite insulation. The best option is to use a composite product made from three layers and reflective surfaces that can sandwich one layer of bulk insulation. Remember to keep the reflective surface clean at all times if you want to get the most from the insulation!
