Preparation

Sheets can be cut using a fine tooth handsaw at low speeds or an abrasive wheel. Cutting produces dust which should be removed either by a vacuum cleaner or an air gun.

Polycarbonate snap on connectors and stainless steel fasteners hold Multicell sheets in place. Compact uses polycarbonate spacer between sheets and a stainless steel retention plate. A minimum roof pitch of 5° is recommended (87mm/1000mm).For maintenance and accessibility, walking boards should be used across the connectors.

INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES

Use of product facilitates natural daylight which creates energy efficiency benefits by reducing the need for artificial lighting during daylight hours. The Multicell panels particularly provide significant reductions in demand for air conditioning with high R-values resulting in increased energy savings.

HUMAN HEALTH

Health

Product has no effect on human health.

Comfort
A 10mm Honeycomb panel has a U-Value of 2.11, significantly lower than a typical single glazed clear window, indicating that the panels reduce transmitted heat and improve individual thermal comfort levels.

Indoor Environment Quality
Panels with appropriate tinting can significantly reduce glare, allowing a comfortable level of diffused light into the building. Noise levels will vary depending on the building design. However transmission of external source noise will be reduced through the use of this product.

Electromagnetic Radiation
Not applicable

Safety
Lightweight, durable and high impact resistance means breakage and serious injury due to material breakage during installation is unlikely. High strength decreases likelihood of footfall breakage in roof or skylight uses.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial
Emissions - There generally are limited toxics emitted to land in the production of the raw materials.

Physical - Product is petrochemical based, and will therefore have a limited physical impact due to oil extraction.

Aquatic
Emissions - There generally are limited toxics emitted by this product that will impact aquatic and marine ecosystems.

Physical - Petrochemical production can contribute to oil spills at sea. There are limited physical impacts in aquatic ecosystems created by the manufacturing of this product.

Atmosphere
Greenhouse (GHG) - This product utilises virgin polycarbonate, which is fabricated from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels generate both atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases on combustion. However, through reducing the need for artificial daylighting, the greenhouse gases produced in the building may be reduced by the use of these daylight panels.

Greenhouse intensity - Product has a GHG intensity ranging from 13.9 to 38.1 KgCO2e/m2 for thicknesses of 4mm up to 30mm.

Transport intensity Product is manufactured in Israel. GHG intensities for shipping product are shown below. Shipping port from country of origin is Ashdod. Destination port is Sydney. Does the product reduce transport greenhouse emissions?

  • Greenhouse Intensity for Container Shipping of Danpalon – 0.70 kgCO2e / functional unit

Table below provides land transportation greenhouse intensity figures to help calculate the greenhouse gas intensity of land transportation from shipping port.

0.000195kgCO2e / kg.km

0.000069kgCO2e / kg.km

Transport intensity figures sourced from Australian National Greenhouse Gas Inventory 1990, 1995 and 1999 and WWF International, Inland Navigations and Emissions, 2005.

Operational efficiency - Greater thermal insulation contributes to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions and the translucency of the panels allows the reduction of artificial lighting and thus lighting energy needs.

Re-use Efficiency - Product is 100% recyclable. Panels are able to be reused if not damaged

Toxics and Pollutants - There are generally limited toxics emitted to air in the manufacturing of this product.

Ozone Depletion - No CFCs or HFCs are used as blowing agents in the manufacture of this product.

Urban Heat Island Effects - Product may reduce levels of waste heat from air conditioners as daylight panels may reduce transmitted and re-radiated heat.

Noise - Not applicable

Biodiversity

Petroleum, the primary raw material of polycarbonate, can have significant marine biodiversity impacts in its extraction and potentially catastrophic impacts when spills occur.

RESOURCE DEPLETION

Resource Efficiency

Since polycarbonate is petrochemical (oil) based, the resource efficiency of this product is improved by utilising post-industrial recycled polycarbonate.

Aluminium connectors are used for heavy duty applications, a high embodied energy material155MJ/kg.

Embodied Fossil Fuel Energy

Product has an embodied energy ranging from 207 to 564 MJ/m2.

Transport intensity - Product is manufactured in Israel, Raw materials sourced from Germany. Shipping port from country of origin is Ashdod. Destination port is Sydney.

  • Energy Intensity for Container Shipping of Danpalon- 8.59 MJ / m2

Embodied Water
Information not available

Durability
Product is extremely durable with an expected life that exceeds 25 years. Product is resistant to natural weather action, such as hail impact.

Reusability
Can be reused if panels are not damaged

Repairability
Repairs to panels are not possible - they are generally replaced if damaged.

Design for Dematerialisation
Product is not designed for dematerialisation

Design for Disassembly
Product can be dismantled and reused elsewhere if required. Breaking the mechanical lock between panel and connector allows the system to be taken apart.

Recyclability
Polycarbonate and aluminium are 100% recyclable.

ECOSPECIFIER ISSUES OF CONCERN / RED LIGHTS

Red Light Comment:

Product is unlikely to cause harmful effects in its purchased form. However, there are OH&S issues related to its manufacturing process. Product is made from polycarbonate based on bisphenol-A (BPA) which is a phenol based on benzene. Bisphenol-A is associated with level 2 R-phrases such as 'Risk of serious damage to eyes' and 'Harmful to aquatic organisms'. Preventative actions should be taken to eliminate the risk related to handling bisphenol-A.

Minor issue:

This product uses aluminium accessories. Aluminium has a high embodied energy. However, in this case this is offset by the product's improved thermal performance, low maintenance lifespan, and high recycling potential.
