ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions–Sourcing resin as a by-product from wood pulp, avoids localised impacts to the terrestrial environment that may occur from stimulants, such as sulphuric acid, that aid resin flow.

Physical – No known impacts to physical environment.

Aquatic

EmissionsSynteko Natural 1608 is free from solvents, reducing the likelihood of emissions to the aquatic environment.

Physical – Product contains small amounts of fatty acids with cobalt which may be toxic to aquatic environments (R51/53).

Atmosphere

Greenhouse (GHG) – Manufacture of product produces greenhouse gas emissions similar to conventional production methods for solid wood oils.

Greenhouse intensity – This information is not available.

Transport intensity Product is manufactured in Sweden. Energy and GHG intensities for shipping product are shown below. Shipping port from country of origin is Stockholm. Destination port is Sydney.

Biodiversity

Synteko Natural 1608 has reduced biodiversity impacts compared with vinyl, acrylic or polyurethane based products which require the extraction of petroleum for synthetic polymer based constituents which disrupts local landscapes and alters local ecosystems.

Solid content in Synteko Natural 1608 is sourced from oil resin which is obtained as a by-product of wood pulp manufacture. This avoids potentially negative environmental and health issues associated with use and disposal of traditional polyurethane based products. However, the certification of the timber sourced for this resin production is unknown. Various timber certification schemes are currently in operation in regards to the sustainable and responsible management of forests as sources of wood. According to ecospecifier, an analysis of the various timber certification schemes reveals that the FSC is the most rigorous and robust certification, due to the stringent criteria followed (e.g. FSC is the only scheme based on a clear set of minimum performance based criteria, prohibits the conversion of forests to plantations, and also prohibits the use of GMO trees and toxic baiting). See Timber Technical Guide for further information.

Sourcing resin from wood pulp also reduces the impacts of extracting resin by tapping trees. Intensive tapping practices can have impacts in tree longevity and regeneration.

RESOURCE DEPLETION

Resource Efficiency

The major components of alkyds are fatty acids and triglyceride oils which are low cost and renewable resources sourced from resin from pine. The natural based oils and sealants penetrate wood, adding to its durability. Contrary to polyurethane finishes, in which the entire surface must be sanded, repairs to natural oil finishes only require sanding of the targeted area, if at all. Furthermore, rejuvenation of the oiled surfaces requires no sanding, which further preserves the timber.

Product also has a high coverage rate of 15-60m²/L (depending on tools and wood species). This coverage rate is up to three times greater than comparative wood floor oils when used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

Durability

Product is durable with a life expectancy of greater than 10 years. Product is suitable for areas where high wear resistance is required provided the maintenance programme is adhered to.

Reusability

Not reusable. Left over products may be decanted into smaller containers, containing no oxygen, and kept (for a limited time) for touch ups or other projects.

Repairability

Hard-wearing quality means long life and correct maintenance will avoid the need for re-sanding. Notwithstanding this, there is a simple process for spot repairing which involves the use of Synteko Recover, maintenance/rejuvenating oil (Please see Red Light Comment section below relating to the use of this product).

Design for Dematerialisation

Product has high solid content, allowing it cover more area than standard wood floor oils.

Design for Disassembly

Not applicable.

Recyclability

Maintenance

Daily sweeping with electrostatic sweep mop to remove dust and grit; weekly dry-damp mopping and periodic buffing are recommenced. In addition, periodic maintenance with the rejuvenating/ maintenance oil Synteko Recover should follow. Manufacturer recommends washing with Synteko Soap, which is derived from lanolin oils, a by-product of wool.

ECOSPECIFIER ISSUES OF CONCERN / RED LIGHTS

Synteko Natural 1608 has no Issues of Concern or Red Light Comments attributed to the product, however the product requires that maintenance is done using the Synteko Recover product.

Red Light Comment

Synteko Recover contains up to 20% of the constituent Naptha which may cause cancer (R45), may cause hereditable genetic damage (R46) and may cause lung damage if swallowed (R65). There is a likely to frequent probability of a moderate severity in user and occupant exposure if applied while space is occupied and if not properly ventilated over an appropriate period of time prior to re-occupation. Precautions for workers such as reducing exposure via inhalation and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mitigate potential issues to low risk in accordance with anecospecifier risk assessment. Refer to Materials Safety Data Sheet for more information.

Issue of Concern

Synteko Recover also contains approximately 1% of a substance which is harmful in contact with skin (R21), has limited evidence of carcinogenic effect (R40), has a risk of serious damage to eyes (R41) and may cause sensitisation by skin contact (R43). There is a likely to frequent probability of a moderate severity in user and occupant exposure if applied while space is occupied and if not properly ventilated prior to re-occupation. Precautions for workers such as reducing exposure via inhalation and using appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) mitigate potential issues to low risk in accordance with an ecospecifier risk assessment. Refer to Materials Safety Data Sheet for more information.

For both these components, there is a likely to frequent probability of a moderate severity in user exposure. Users of this product should practice good Occupational, Health and Safety procedures including adequate use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to mitigate potential issues. Furthermore, area should be well ventilated and left to cure before occupants return.
