Magnetite® attaches discreetly to the inside of window reveal. A Magnetite subframe is installed within the existing window reveal using screws and or double sided adhesives. This framework provides a flat surface for the magnetized glazing panels to snap into, providing an air tight magnetic seal. In situations where a reveal/casement is not present then a casement would be installed around the window for the system to fit into.



Windows are one of the most exposed elements of buildings to sun and weather. As such energy efficiency, established by referring to a Window Energy Rating Scheme (WERS), is an important environmental priority. Magnetite® can achieves up to 6 cooling stars and up to 6 heating stars compared to a generic window with a standard aluminium frame. This equates to between 35 and 76% cooling improvement and between 33 and 62 heating improvement over the base window comparison depending on existing window frame (Click here for full table).

High performance windows with airtight seals, such as Magnetite, can achieve significant indoor environmental quality and energy efficiency benefits, especially when fitted with eco-preferred blinds or screens and automation hardware. Window frame, glazing, sealing, ventilation and shading are significant contributors to overall building thermal and human comfort.



PVC is a contentious material; however, Magnetite frames are made from unplasticised PVC (uPVC) which has no problems associated with plasticisers. Please see Glossary for more information on PVC.

Product is using organic based stabilizer instead of lead and tin stabilizer. These windows also have the benefits of reduced condensation, mould, and mildew in cold or air conditioned sub/tropical climates.


Insulating the windows provides a more stable indoor temperature. The magnetic seal eliminates drafts from operational windows and convection off large glass panels. The product is designed to insulate the entire existing window system (frame and glass). Using clear glazing on North facing windows would increase passive solar heating as the clear glazing allows radiant heat to enter the premise and the optical grade acrylic glazing helps to trap the heat in the winter months. Using the solar films that are available with the double glazing system on the east and west facing windows will minimise passive unwanted heating by creating a barrier against radiant heat through the glass and from the frame.

No VOC testing has been done on the product.

Electromagnetic Radiation

Manufacturer states that the magnets used in their product are not strong enough to affect machinery such as computers they are similar in style to the magnets used to keep refrigerator doors shut.


Product is primarily plastic and can be cut with sheers rather than saws. The glazing panel is an optical grade acrylic and is 18 times stronger than glass. If the Magnetite panel were to break it would not shatter.

uPVC is highly toxic in small quantities if burnt and is known to generate hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.

Emissions – Chlorine is a key constituent of PVC and the emissions from its production consist of chlorine and hydrogen. Mercury is also produced during chlorine production.

Physical – Provided that state-of-the-art technology is used the production of PVC, terrestrial, aquatic and atmosphere pollution impacts are considered to be low. Additionally, this product does not constitute a substantial impact on the toxicity of landfill leachate and gas (Life Cycle Assessment of PVC and of principal competing materials, Final Report, commissioned by the European Union, July 2004)


Emissions –Ethylene is produced in the initial production stage of PVC and the emissions to water consist of methanol and butane.

Physical – The petrochemical portion of PVC results in potential sea pollution in the extraction of oil. Other aquatic emissions include methanol and butane in the production of ethylene as well as mercury and chlorine in the production of chlorine (Life Cycle Assessment of PVC and of principal competing materials, Final Report, commissioned by the European Union, July 2004).


Greenhouse (GHG) – This product utilises PVC, which is fabricated from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels generate both atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gasses on combustion. However, through reducing the need for air conditioning and heating, the greenhouse gases produced in the building can be significantly reduced by double glazing.

Operational efficiency – Product reduces the energy consumption of a building by creating a more constant internal temperature which reduces heating and cooling requirements.

Re-use Efficiency – Product is not reusable, but it enables existing windows to be reused which reduces waste.

Toxics and Pollutants – uPVC is highly toxic if burnt, see safety.

Ozone Depletion – No CFC's or HFC's are used as blowing agents in the manufacture of this product

Urban Heat Island Effects – Product may reduce levels of waste heat from air conditioners as double glazing may reduce the use of cooling systems.

Noise – The product will limit noise coming into or out of the building.


Petroleum, the primary raw material of PVC, can have significant marine biodiversity impacts in its extraction and potentially catastrophic impacts when spills occur.



Resource Efficiency

Thin steel strapping attached to the frame to provide a magnetic surface for the panel to snap to. This steel is sourced from post-consumer waste from the siding industry.

All plastic offcuts are recycled. PVC is stored and sent back to the manufacturer in Sydney prior to each manufacturing run. Acrylic panels are also recycled and magnets are re-used in new frames.
