HUMAN HEALTH

Health

Deltamethrin, the active ingredient in the product, is a synthetic pyrethrin that is used as a broad-spectrum insecticide. A person can be exposed to Deltamethrin through skin contact, eye contact or through inhalation resulting in skin irritation, itching, or numbness which is expected to subside within 48 hours. Particular concern is held for those with sensitive skin as they are more prone to deltamethrin causing irritation or numbness. Exposure to deltamethrin can also aggravate any existing respiratory conditions.

In order to mitigate exposure to deltamethrin it is essential to utilise proper personal protection equipment, including face shields and protective rubber gloves, when handling the chemical. Installation of the product is conducted only by those who have undergone training. Those installing the product must wear the appropriate safety clothing and equipment which includes Protective Gloves: AS 2161, Industrial Clothing AS 2919, Industrial Eye Protection: AS 1336 and AS 1337 and Occupational footwear: AS/NZS 2210. It is recommended that for those handling the product must wash their hands immediately after use.

In the product, the deltamethrin is woven into a polyester blanket which is sandwiched in between layers of polyethylene laminate, minimising the risk of skin contact for installers and building occupants. The product reduces occupational health risks related to the spraying or handling of liquid pesticides.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions – Localised emissions to land around the manufacturing facilities occur during production of the constituent materials.

Physical – Product constituents are mainly plastics, which are petrochemical based and could cause localised pollution due to oil extraction. Deltamethrin if handled incorrectly can leach into the soil, however this is unlikely as the deltamethrin is locked into the product between an upper and lower layer of polyethylene laminate.

Aquatic

Emissions –Deltamethrin is highly toxic to aquatic organisms. However, as the substance is locked into the non-woven polyester blanket (needle-punched blanket)between laminated polyethylene sheets, it is unlikely that this chemical would end up in these natural systems.  Although this is the case, there is still a potential risk of migration of deltamethrin from the blanket into surrounding bodies of water. The blankets are commonly used under slabs on non-capillary fill with underslab drainage helping to minimise the chance of the blanket coming into contact with water.

Physical – Product constituents are mainly plastics. Petrochemical extraction can cause localised aquatic disturbance around oil fields via mining infrastructure and dredging of the seabed.

Atmosphere

Greenhouse (GHG) – Fabrication of the petrochemical based constituents are associated with GHG emissions.

Greenhouse intensity – 1.0789 kg CO2/ m2 (excluding Deltamethrin data). The Functional Unit = m2

Transport intensity Product is manufactured in China. GHG intensities for shipping product are shown below. Shipping port from country of origin is Shanghai. Destination port is Brisbane.

  • Greenhouse Intensity for Container Shipping of product – 0.0376 kgCO2e / m2

Operational efficiency – Once installed, the product will last up to 50 years

Re-use Efficiency – None

Toxics and Pollutants – See Health and Biodiversity sections

Ozone Depletion – Not applicable

Urban Heat Island Effects – Not applicable

Noise – Not applicable

Biodiversity

Deltamethrin is moderate to highly toxic to aquatic organisms, but belongs to pyrethroids, one of the least poisonous insecticide groups to mammals. It was found to be non-toxic to terrestrial animals such as birds and honeybees. Soil treated with deltamethrin had no effect on earthworms.

RESOURCE DEPLETION

ECOSPECIFIER ISSUES OF CONCERN / RED LIGHT

Deltamethrin can cause irritation or numbness for individuals with sensitive skin.  Exposure to deltamethrin may also aggravate existing respiratory conditions.  Synthetic pyrethroids may cause issues if leached into aquatic environments. Proper use of personal protection equipment, including face shields and protective rubber gloves, are required to ensure that exposure to deltamethrin is avoided. In order to mitigate exposure to deltamethrin it is essential to utilise proper personal protection equipment, including face shields and gloves, when handling the chemical.

However, since the deltamethrin in JH Termite Barrier  remains locked up within the blanket fibres, human and aquatic ecosystem contact is, according to an ecospecifier risk assessment, 'unlikely' and hence these risks are minimal.
