ECOSPECIFIER LIFE-CYCLE ASSESSMENT

INTEGRATED DESIGN AND POLICY ISSUES

Elmich subsoil drainage products VersiFlex, VersiCell and VersiDrain range offer landscape engineering solutions designed to provide adequate drainage to supporting structures, such as balconies, basement walls, concrete/structural ground slabs, and planter boxes, protecting these structures from associated water damage. Some products in the range also remove the need of additional protection membranes, reducing on site costs and maintenance. VersiFlex and VersiCell in conjunction with other Elmich products can be used to retain infill in gravity retaining and free standing walls, and on Green Roof Systems. (See Elmich - Green Walls & Roof Systems).

Turf and Soil Stabilisation product TurfPave is designed for use in grassed areas subjected to pedestrian traffic and occasional vehicular traffic.  Its high-strength, lightweight, porous interlocking structure enables stormwater infiltration while also protecting grass roots from compaction. Root compaction can lead to reduced plant growth, therefore product helps to reduce landscaping costs. Product is suitable for use in overflow parking, home driveways, and golf buggy paths and for slope stabilisation.  TurfPave may also be in-filled with decorative gravel to stabilise car parking areas.

Stormwater management products VersiTank and CelluTank are designed to provide efficient at-source management for either storing stormwater or facilitating sub-surface infiltration, with the larger CelluTank modules produce greater stability compared to smaller products. These tanks are suitable for use under impermeable surfaces such as parking area driveways, playgrounds and sports fields or for capture of stormwater from roofs.  Product can therefore be part of a water harvesting system, reducing associated potable water use of a building.

Paver and decking support products VersiPave, VersiJack and SpiraPave are suitable for use in construction of roofs, plaza decks, balconies and pool surrounds. These allow for easy placement of pavers, which require a well-drained and even surface. The products have the ability to reduce sound transmission, increase heat insulation while concealing unsightly services and allow ready access to waterproofing membranes. VersiJack and SpiraPave are adjustable and are suitable for the support of bearers in decking systems.

VersiCell, VersiFlex, VersiDrain, TurfPave, VersiTank and CelluTank encourage infiltration and natural water retention and purification processes by providing a permeable surface that facilitates infiltration and retention of rainfall to distribute loads from pedestrian and vehicular traffic and minimise grass and root compaction.

The majority of the earth's solid surfaces are naturally permeable, facilitating the infiltration and retention of rainfall. In urban areas, however, the majority of surfaces are constructed from concrete and bitumen materials and are thus impermeable. These materials retain heat, raising temperatures in built-up spaces leading to urban heat island (UHI) buildup, contributing to an accumulation of air and surface pollutants in water runoff, leading to the pollution of surrounding aquatic ecosystems. Turf paving, reinforced turf, green roofs, green walls and paving grid supports reduce stored heat and heat transfer, thus minimising UHI and heat transmission through to buildings underneath.  A reduction in the heat load of a building and built up area can reduce the demand on HVAC systems and thus building energy costs.  This can also lead to a reduction in HVAC plant size.

Elmich drainage products with the exception of VersiDrain 8/8Mesh/8 Geo/10Geo are manufactured from 100% recycled polyethylene and 100% recycled polypropylene. Recycled content is an important feature of many eco-preferable building materials because it represents content that has been diverted from landfills.

HUMAN HEALTH

Health
This product will not adversely affect human health. Some uses, e.g. green roofs, green walls, turf paving and reinforced turf will have specific health benefits in absorbing toxins and VOCs in air and water.

Comfort
Products that support green roofs or elevated grid paving when used over buildings will reduce heat load and transfer to buildings below with consequent energy and comfort benefits.

Indoor Environment Quality
VersiDrain 8 Geo and VersiDrain 10 Geo products can be used in combination with indoor planter boxes; they also have the potential for use in internal vegetated or green walls.  VersiFlex can also be an efficient drainage system in planter boxes. Air quality and occupant productivity can be improved with increased use of internal plants.

VersiFlex, VersiCell and the VersiDrain range modules when used in basement walls protect the waterproofing membrane and create a thermal insulation barrier to combat humidity and subsequently mould and odour issues.

ECOLOGICAL QUALITY

Terrestrial

Emissions - In built-up areas, airborne and superficial pollutants are trapped in water run-off contributing to terrestrial pollution. The use of Elmich systems (TurfPave and VersiTank) can help reduce pollutant emissions to soil and groundwater.

The VersiDrain range is made of virgin HDPE, plastics made from petroleum.  The extraction of fossil fuels can result in localised emissions around oil fields and spills. All other products of the Elmich' drainage systems range (VersiFlex, VersiCell, VersiTank, CelluTank, TurfPave, VersiPave, VersiJack, and SpiraPave) are made of 100% post-consumer recycled polypropylene or polyethylene, which reduces the potential terrestrial emissions of the product.

Physical - Petrochemical extraction can cause localised terrestrial disturbance around oil fields, via mining infrastructure and subsidence. Products made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials eliminate associated landfill mass, and extraction of petroleum on which polypropylene and polyethylene are based.

Aquatic
Emissions - Petroleum extraction and distribution can contribute to oil spills at sea.  Elmich' drainage systems made of 100% post-consumer recycled polypropylene and polyethylene however do reduce the potential aquatic emissions of the product.

In built-up areas, airborne and superficial pollutants are trapped in water run-off contributing to terrestrial pollution. The use of Elmich drainage systems (TurfPave and VersiTank) reduces pollutant emissions to aquatic systems.

Operational efficiency - The different drainage systems are efficient due to high surface void area and internal void volume, making it ideal for retaining walls. When used in planter boxes and on landscaped deck areas, the water stored minimises the need for irrigation.  VersiTank and CelluTank modules allow storm water to be stored and re-used for irrigation, therefore reducing the use of potable water. The paver and decking support system are easily installed and removed, either for inspection and/or repairs, minimising inconvenience to building occupants.

Reuse Efficiency - Systems are high value products with good reuse potential and are easy to re-use.

Toxics and Pollutants - Toxics or pollutants not known, but products made from 100% recycled content avoid emissions otherwise produced from virgin material manufacture.

Noise - VersiJack, SpiraPave and VersiPave have sound reducing properties when used in combination with pavers and as components of a green roof system significant noise reduction benefits can be obtained.

Biodiversity
Elmich drainage systems (VersiTank and CelluTank) allow water to be either captured for re-use or for infiltration into surrounding soil, recharging the water table and providing moisture for surrounding vegetation and biological communities. VersiJack, SpiraPave and VersiPave facilitate the drainage of paved areas.

As components of a green roof system, VersiFlex (interlocking drainage cell) and VersiCell (sub-soil drainage modules), facilitate the potential for major increases in local biodiversity if appropriate indigenous species are selected for use with the drainage components.

Elmich range is easy to disassemble, various products have interlocking design, others are just butted together without interlocking and individual components can easily be re-used and re-assembled as is without modification.
