The main ingredients of Olympia Micro™ ClimaPlus™ ceiling tile is slag wool made from blast furnace slag which is by-product of iron and steel making. Iron ore mining causes deforestation to destroy habitats and disrupts wildlife. It also causes sound and noise pollution. Recycling the slag into insulation reduces the impacts of landfill or stockpiling.
The product also contains kaolin and limestone. The extraction of kaolin and limestone involves mining, a high biodiversity impact process. Mining leads to loss of biodiversity, habitat destruction, modified soil and profiles, topography and drainage, which additionally impacts natural vegetation and surrounding biodiversity. Dust is one of the most visible impacts associated with limestone quarrying due to the drilling, crushing and screening of the rock.
