GreenTagCert™ LCARate Assessment

SAC1_Integrated_Design_Synergy

Integrated Design Synergy

Product has not been assessed under this criterion. Product does not create synergy within other building systems and hence this SAC is deemed 'Not Applicable'.

SAC2_LCA_Greenhouse

Tretford Roll Carpet has been attributed a score of 0.95 on a scale of -1 to 1 where 0 is neutral and 1 is worst case BAU under SAC-2 Life Cycle Assessment - Greenhouse. The lower the score, the better the product performs in this category. Product achieves Greenhouse gas emissions of 13.77 kgCO2e/m2.

Greenhouse emissions are comprised of negative impacts from CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions as well as positive impacts from sink effects where the Goat Hair and Jute components comprises carbon bound up from the atmosphere.

The Greenhouse gas footprints for the product are measured in accordance with ISO 14064:2006 or PAS 2050:2008.

SAC3_LCA_Health

Tretford Roll Carpet has been attributed a score of 0.10 on a scale of 0 to 1 where 0 is neutral and 1 is worst case BAU under SAC-3 Life Cycle Assessment - Health. The lower the score, the better the product performs in this category.

ECOSPECIFIER CAUTIONARY ASSESSMENT PROCESS (ESCAP)

Issues of Concern / Red Lights

The product has successfully passed the ESCAP and no issues of concern or red light comments exist regarding the toxicity of the products. The manufacturer of Tretford Roll Carpet has a certified ISO 14001 EMS and has demonstrated the gathering of data on toxics usage and generation in a format that allows for the tracking of all toxics purchased or generated, with the aim of elimination of toxics in the production process, along with a commitment to continuous improvement.

The use of Goats Hair, Rayon and Jute in this product decrease the overall negative impacts associated with the use of synthetic and chemically manufactured products.

The unreacted, raw materials of this product contain carbon black. In 2006, the IARC reclassified carbon black as possibly carcinogenic to humans (Class 2B). This issue relates to the inhalation of pure powdered and ultra-fine carbon black dust during manufacture and is not considered a risk, as the carbon black is not in a respirable form when bound into the product. Refer to the Materials Safety Datasheet for more information.

Product contains Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) which is a controversial material from a long term eco and health preferable stance. However PVC's durability, long performance life, resilience to moisture and ease of maintenance make it a commonly used product.

The first step in production of PVC is making the monomer, vinyl chloride. This process involves chlorine gas and may involve mercury (see Glossary). Vinyl Chloride monomer is a Category 1 carcinogen with potential worker health impacts during manufacture. Contemporary air filtration minimises Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) implications. Disposal via incineration (unlikely in Australia) can produce dioxins.

The product utilises leading edge barium zinc stabilisers as a replacement for the organotin stabilisers used in the past production of PVC flooring products.

Tretford Roll Carpet is available in a range of colours, however the colours Anthracite and Diplomat Red require Chrome Mordant Dyeing process which is banned under the GreenTag standard. These colours are not certified under the GreenTag certification system. Waterford Carpets is committed to finding an alternative dye method to the currently used Chrome Mordant Dyeing process whilst maintaining the quality of the product.

IEQ Certification: Volatile Organic Compounds VOCs: This product is Certified to meet Green Star™ IEQ VOC credits for Carpets and Flooring.

SAC4_LCA_Ecopoints

Life Cycle Assessment - ecospecifier LCA EcoPoints

Tretford Roll Carpet has been attributed a score of 1.00 on a scale of 0 to 1 where 0 is neutral and 1 is worst case BAU under SAC-4 Life Cycle Assessment - ecospecifier EcoPoints, based on the comparison to the Business as Usual (BAU) Nylon 6,6 broadloom carpet.

Waterford Carpets, the manufacturer of the product, has undergone a Life Cycle Assessment of its Tretford Roll Carpet with data verified by an onsite audit of its manufacturing facility, which recognises the GreenTag Rating with a 'Plus' attribute.

An ecospecifier LCA EcoPoint is the weighted results of the Cradle to End of Life LCA analysis of the building material, compared to a 'Business as Usual' or typical worst case scenario product used within the market.  The ecospecifier LCA EcoPoint score for a product is determined by product raw materials composition, manufacturing processes and transportation impacts and includes any required preparation and directly associated components.

The life cycle impacts considered by the EcoPoint score include:

  • Energy and Fuel use
  • Air Pollution
  • Ozone Depletion
  • Human Health
  • Ecosystem Quality
  • Eco-Toxins and Waste
  • Resource Depletion
  • Water Pollution

SAC5_Biodiversity

Biodiversity - Physical Impacts

Tretford Roll Carpet has been attributed a score of 0.54 on a scale of -1 to 1 where 0 is neutral and 1 is worst case BAU under SAC-5 Biodiversity - Physical Impacts (non-LCA).

Petroleum, the primary raw material of PVC, can have significant marine biodiversity impacts in its extraction, and in the case of oil spill impacts, while rare, petroleum can have significant localised impacts.
