PAC-2Toxicity

CAUTIONARY ASSESSMENT PROCESS (ESCAP)

The boundary of the cautionary assessment process covers Karndean’s Manufacturing and distribution Facility.

Issues of Concern / Red Lights

The products have successfully passed the Ecospecifier Cautionary Assessment Process (ESCAP) and no issues of concern or red lights comments exist regarding the toxicity of the products. The manufacturer of Karndean Luxury Vinyl Tiles has a certified ISO 14001 EMS and has demonstrated the gathering of data on toxics usage and generation in a format that allows tracking of all toxics purchased or generated with the aim of elimination of toxics in the production process, along with a commitment to continuous improvement.

The product contains Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). PVC's durability, long performance life, resilience to moisture and low maintenance requirements make it a commonly used product. The first step in production of PVC is making the monomer, vinyl chloride. This process involves chlorine gas and may involve mercury in the case of other manufacturers (see Glossary). Vinyl Chloride monomer (VCM) is a Category 1 carcinogen with potential worker health impacts during manufacture. Contemporary air filtration minimises OH&S implications. Disposal via incineration (unlikely in Australia) can produce dioxins. Karndean offers a Product Stewardship Program (see PAC 7 End of Life) to minimise environmental impacts of products' end of life.

 PAC-3Materials_Extraction

DATA COLLECTION

Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
The company operates under an ISO 14001 Certified EMS at their manufacturing facility.

 PAC-4Water

PAC-5Social&Env

LEGAL COMPLIANCE
Karndean has not been involved in any litigation in the past 5 years and has demonstrated compliance with relevant social and environmental legislative or other legal requirements.

Biodiversity

Petroleum, the primary raw material of PVC, can have significant marine biodiversity impacts in its extraction and potentially catastrophic impacts when spills occur.

The mining and processing of calcium carbonate can produce emissions to land from surface impoundments of liquids, solids, slurries and from storage facilities.

PAC-6Durability

FITNESS FOR PURPOSE
Product demonstrates compliance with the Standard for EN 649 “Resilient floor coverings; homogenous and heterogeneous polyvinyl chloride floor coverings; specifications and other relevant national fitness for purpose standards.

REPLACEMENT PARTS
Karndean Luxury Vinyl Tiles can be replaced individually and Karndean provides replacement parts upon request.

PAC-7End_of_Life

PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM
Karndean offers a publically available Product Stewardship Program (PSP) – for Karndean’s Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT), which entails contractual arrangements with their customers where used Karndean LVT can be returned to Karndean (conditions apply). The Suitably qualifying returned tiles are sent to an Australian PVC recycling plant, where the components are able to be recycled into PVC automobile component products.

VERIFICATION OF PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM
Karndean has provided evidence that the necessary arrangements and relationships exist in order to carry out the obligations of its PSP.

DESIGN FOR DISASSEMBLY
The purpose of design for disassembly is to ensure products are designed in a way that enables their easy separation into base constituent materials to improve end of life recycling. Karndean’s Luxury Vinyl Tiles can be fully recycled through the Karndean Designflooring takeback Scheme into a variety of new PVC products and hence it satisfies the criterion of design for disassembly.

PAC-8Product_Emissions

IEQ Certification:  VOCs: This product is certified to Meet Green Star® IEQ VOC credits for carpets and resilient flooring.

The GreenTag GreenRate certificate may be used to demonstrate compliance to the relevant Green Star® IEQ credits for VOC emissions of flooring products.

Indoor Environment Quality

Karndean Luxury vinyl Tiles has been tested for TVOC to ASTM D5116 and complies as a minimum with TVOC emissions limits as follows:

a)   Total VOC limit 0.5mg/m2/hour

b)   4-PC (4-Phenylcyclohexene) 0.05mg/m2 per hour.

Product does not adversely affect IEQ and these low emissions add to a healthy indoor environment.

To maximise the health benefits of using this low VOC flooring product (during both the construction and operational phase), Karndean recommends a range of GreenTag certified installation adhesives with similarly low VOC emission levels, please click here for more information.

Information last verified on 13th Oct 2015.  Certification valid until 27th July 2016.
