SUSTAINABLE HOMES PROGRAM

The Sustainable Homes program is an Australian first involving the Queensland Government, local councils and industry across the State working together to build a series of houses throughout Queensland that demonstrates the social, environmental and economic components of sustainable housing. This state-wide program is overseeing the construction of up to 20 sustainable display homes in key growth areas.

These homes will showcase the triple bottom line of sustainability to the market by using best practice design principles, building technologies, materials and products to local trades and consumers with local government and industry support. A communications program has been developed to promote the program and projects to target audiences, including trades and consumers.

The recognition and use of more sustainable building products and services is gaining momentum in Queensland due to a range of drivers. It is envisaged that this program will enhance interest in sustainable housing, as well as create wider exposure given its mainstream focus.

As a non-profit initiative of local councils to participate in the program, with endorsement of the Sustainable Homes State Steering Committee, each display house will be open to the public for a minimum of six months. This open house period will provide a significant marketing opportunity to directly promote more sustainable products and materials to visitors.
